Light in the South

I know it wasn’t a trip to the deep south, but Virginia and North Carolina are still the south to me, a boy from Ohio. We traveled back roads to Farmville and Jettersville and everywhere we looked was a site of civil war battlefield. I know it is not much different than other rural areas in America, but it felt different. The trees were different, the food was different, the light was different. Many places seems trapped in time, or totally over taken by decay.  More gun shops too. For Carter it was a visit to the places of his youth and a return to see the change and talk with people he went to school with all those years ago. I in turn was his personal photographer. And while it was not the landscape of my youth, it felt vaguely familiar and comfortable. And like Ohio, it is a good place to be from.
